The eastern portal of the mile long Foulridge Tunnel.

Close-up of the eastern portal of Foulridge Tunnel. Entry to the tunnel is controlled by light signals, with each direction having a ten minute window each hour. The height gauge above the entrance is necessary to prevent boats over a certain height from hitting low points in the tunnel roof.

Foulridge Lower Reservoir, built to supply the summit level of the canal, is almost directly above the canal tunnel.

The smaller Slipper Hill Reservoir, close to the western tunnel portal.

The western portal of Foulridge Tunnel. The mile long tunnel is straight enough to be able to see light at the other end.
