Now that the Huddersfield Narrow Canal has been restored and re-opened it is now possible to walk the towpath along the entire length except for Standedge Tunnel and the new tunnels in the centre of Huddersfield. The red line on the map below shows the pedestrian route between Queen Street South and Lock 3e. There is no pedestrian access to Lock 2E. ![]() The cobbled path between Lock 3e and Manchester Road has been closed due to vandals throwing stones at the windows of Sellers' building from the path. The pedestrian route is now to leave or join the canal at Lock 4e, diverting along Manchester Road. Lock 3e can be accessed along the towpath from Lock 4e, but please note that the path is a dead end. It should be noted that access from the towpath to Queen Street South is via a flight of iron steps. Wheelchair users or others who would find these steps difficult to use should follow the route shown by the green line. This runs between Commercial Street bridge and the lockside of Lock 4E to the west of Manchester Road, with access from the garage forecourt. This route is longer but also avoids the steep climb up Chapel Hill. |
